Translation Notes/Trivia
- In modern days, “casual kimono” sounds like a misnomer but back then when everyone wore kimono, there were casual ones (houmon-gi) and formal ones (irotomesode). You can tell formal ones from casual ones because casual ones would have patterns on the shoulder/upper body. Formal ones are solid color with patterns on the ribbon only.
- Tsujigahana and chrysanthemums are two out of several common types of patterns. Tsujigahana is named after a dye technique, but it usually describes a very busy pattern with lots of small, colorful flowers. It’s a “cutesy” look in a way. Chrysanthemums, on the other hand, is a larger flower and usually less pastel and more bold colors, so I think it looks more “sexy”.
- It was only recently that I learned tanuki is not a racoon. Tanuki has been described as “raccoon dog” because it looks like one, but they are genetically different animals.
- “Once in a lifetime” (ichigo ichie) is a very famous phrase for tea ceremony because it means you only have one chance to make the perfect tea, so you better focus all your energy into it and not mess up. I was surprised to find how prevalent this phrase is used in modern culture.
- As Jojima explained, otoshi-bumi has 2 interpretations. One, written in all katakana (オトシブミ) is a weevil, a type of insect that lives on leaves. However, written in hiragana/kanji (落とし文), it literally means a dropped letter. The interpretation comes from the practice of dropping a letter at the feet of their secret lover, rather than handing it to them, to keep the relationship hidden. This is cold war/Russian spy level stealth.

Can you please tell me what Tsubaki said in Japanese when he said “I believe I’m in love with you” to Nao? I didn’t quite catch it. Something along the line of “hikari deru”???
He says 惹かれてる. It’s still puppy love at this point, so i used “in love with you” rather than “i love you”.
