Taiyou no Ko

Ishimura Shu is a graduate physics student at Kyoto University. The Japanese navy has commissioned the Kyoto University’s physics lab to work on an atomic bomb. Shu and his labmates begins to work on the atomic bomb starting by creating a centrifuge that’s fast enough to separate Uranium 238 from Uranium 235. However, they come across technical difficulties as well as moral dilemma towards working on a military weapon.

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Einstein visited Tokyo in 1922
  • Professor Beams was an actual professor at University of Virginia, who published papers on centrifuges.
  • The song Setsu was singing is called the Gondola Song (Gondola no uta). It’s a popular song back in those days.
  • This was made as a companion piece to the movie, Taiyou no Ko (to be released in 2021), so the ending is intentionally left ambiguous.
