Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Food
    • Reminder: Tonkatsu is pork cutlet while tonkotsu is pork bone soup.
  • Culture
    • Recorder flute is an instrument that’s part of the elementary school curriculum in Japan (and even in America). Not sure about other countries.
    • Shichimi spice is a common condiment in Japanese restaurants.
    • Gochimeshi was a phenomenon introduced during quarantine to help restaurants out by buying gift cards. Some people took an extra step and invented an app which lets you pay for food, but the recipient gets to choose what food to get delivered. The app let you sent the “food coupon” to a specific person (like a distant family member) or an anonymous stranger.
    • The culture of saying “Otsukaresama”, “gokurousama” (and other variations). Literally, it means “Good work/job today” and you say it to everyone you pass by in your company as a greeting equivalent to “Have a nice day” “See you tomorrow” (parting ways after you say it), or “Hello” “How are you” (acknowledging them as you run into them). There’s no direct translation in English because saying “good job today” sounds weird at best if you’re not on the same team (how do you know I did any work?!) and condescending at worst.
    • Blue Impulse are Japanese air show airplanes.
    • Pekopa is a Japanese comedic duo.
    • Iwate is a prefecture in north Japan. Speaking generically, people in Tokyo seem to think everywhere that’s not Tokyo is “rural” and “they do things backwards/weird/behind the times” compared to Tokyo.
  • The voice over for Lemon was done by real Pekopa guy.
