No Side Game – Episode 3

The season starts in just 2 months and Astros need to get a full house in Tokiwa Stadium, to even have a chance to start paying back their 1.4 billion yen debt. And the strategy Kimishima came up with… is to start a fan club. Will the players be able to balance work, practice, and now what seems like endless hours of volunteering?

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • J League is the professional soccer league in Japan that started in 1993.
    • Anecdote (a.k.a. no source for this except personal perception of the culture):
In Japan, kids start joining afterschool clubs (run by the school) in 3rd grade. In the beginning, a lot of kids don’t have a preference for one sport over another, so most kids just do what’s popular. The start of J League brought enough popularity for soccer in youth that it led to many kids joining the soccer club. This resulted in less kids joining the basketball club, and so there’s this 90s kids vs 80s kids divide between who liked basketball as a kid, and who liked soccer as a kid.
  • The Japanese Rugby Football Union is renamed to Japanese Rugby Football Association in the story.
