Miman Keisatsu – Episode 1

Ichinose Jiro and Honma Kai starts off as roommates at the police academy at Katanozaka campus. The classes are taught by Katanozaka Yuzuru, who at one point was an excellent criminal profiler, but got demoted due to speaking out against his superiors. His assistant is Oikawa Ranko, a strict and hard-ass instructor.

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Cultural difference: In the west, incoming students are identified by the year they will graduate, like “Class of 2020”. In Japan, incoming students are identified by the number of years, like “258th incoming class”. The Japanese like to focus on “where they’ve been” whereas Americans like to focus more on “where they’re going”.
  • Language: In the beginning, Oikawa describes Kai-kun as “delusional millennial”. In Japanese, she says 意識高い系 (ishiki takai kei), not to be confused with 意識高い人(ishiki takai hito). The latter is actually a compliment for a really talented new hires. The former is an insult for a slew of students who are “wanna-be talented” new hires. It’s a relatively new term that people started using from 2008. There’s no perfect equivalent in English, but some examples of what ishiki takai kei people do are: take classes that are harder than what they can handle, applying for jobs that they don’t qualify for, expecting to be as smart as their peers and give up when they realize the truth (as opposed to keep working harder), etc. There is no equivalent in English because America is all about working towards that dream that’s out of your reach (fake it til you make it), unlike Japan where people expect you to do the job you can handle.
  • Language: Honma Kai sounds like ホンマかい, which is Kansai-ben version of 本当か (=are you serious?)
  • In case you’re not familiar with American culture: IOU
  • Japanese culture: Touch is also about a brother who takes over his dead brother’s place in a high school baseball team, to try and go to Koshien (High School World Series).
