She thought “I’m running around working my butt off and he’s off drinking and partying with women!” and decided to breakup with Masa. (This part was also depicted in the drama).

Commentary
This drama did not have the best casting, or plot, but it had the nostalgic magic only a 90s kid would understand. Every single insert song brought back memories, and that’s what made me translate every single insert songs I could.
If you’re looking for a good, accurate, biographical account of Hamasaki Ayumi, this is not it. But if you’re looking for an entertaining trip down memory lane, this hit it out of the park.
Now that I finally understand the backstory to all of Ayu’s songs, I appreciate them a lot more and I find myself actually listening to them on repeat.

Pretty sad this is over, what will i do now every Saturday at 7:15am pt? I totally agree with you that this brings back good memories since i was living in Tokyo not too far from that Shibuya crossing from about 98-02. Here are my thoughts about this.
I remember seeing the appears performance on TV and clearly remember her apologizing and at the time just thought she forgot her lines, but apparently not. The costume and makeup here was also the closes they got to making her look like Ayu, the only difference was facial structure but not much they could have done with that.
Also, the way Masa used Reika was just brutal, but considering all the things she did, i think they were even after that. Kinda weird to see her without the eye patch and smiling at the end.
I both agree and disagree with President Nakatani about the relationship, on one hand the period depicted in this episode produced some of her best songs, but I don’t think they had to pick career over relationship.
The whole breakup seemed manufactured, like it was dictated by the plot. She didn’t even really question him about it. Maybe she understood the reasoning already, but there should have been more conflict her.
Finally, I have also started listening to her old songs again with renewed interest. Revealing the meanings to each song was probably the best thing they did here, kinda like Eminem in 8-Mile when he was on the bus writing his lyrics.
Anyways, always appreciate the uploads, hopefully the summer dramas will be as good.
I agree with everything you said. I think masa and reika had a toxic “use each other” relationship. I think the original clip showed the audience encouraging her too, and that was lost in the show. I think many saw what happened to TK and Kahara Tomomi and Matsuura didn’t want Ayu to go through the same thing. Which worked, I’ll say, because Ayu is way more famous than Kahara these days.

My parents’ Japanese is not sufficient enough to understand a show like this, but the subbed episodes you provided proved to be the highlight of the week, as we all got together and watched them.
Say all you want about the acting, or the cheesiness of the show; this show is a major nostalgia-bomb. I’m sure anyone who experienced millennial Japanese culture will enjoy this.
