Tendo goes all the way to Kagoshima to convince Sakura to come back. He spends the night with Sakura’s family and is overwhelmed at the small-town hospitality. Her family is ecstatic to meet him and asks a whole bunch of question… which leads Sakura to realize that Tendo has never said he loves her! How will Tendo navigate her crazy parents and… will she finally get to hear his confession?

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Cultural Context
    • First, bath culture is big in Japan. People don’t normally just take showers. That’s why when Nanase’s mom realized her house is not fit for a guest to take a bath, she sent the whole family to a public bath (called sento).
    • In a scene where Sakura’s trying to act cute, he literally says “Did you eat something spoiled?” because there’s a reference that you act out of character when you eat something bad. This reference doesn’t work in English, so instead, “hitting yourself in the head” is used.
    • The Japanese literally use “herbivore” for “passive” and “carnivore” for “aggressive” as ways to describe personalities.
    • In the show, Sakura actually says Nagoya is famous for their “Hitsumabushi”. Hitsumabushi, just like unagi-don, is unagi (eel) over rice. But the difference is in the way it’s served. Hitsumabushi is when eel is served over rice in a round, wooden bucket. Unagi-don is when eel is served over a “donburi” or a rice bowl. On the other hand, Una-ju is when eel is served over a square rice box. This is important because to get the eel to fit nicely in a box, you are getting the thicker, center-cuts. And often, una-ju are 2-layered, so you’re getting much more eel and the price reflects that.
  • Medical
    • PSVT = Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. It’s a type of arrhythmia where the upper chamber of your heart short-circuited so you have a rapid heartbeat.
    • In the scene after the car crash, I hope it was clear that Sakura and Tendo are triaging patients on scale of green, yellow, and red where red is the most critical.
    • Hemopneumothorax is a condition in which blood and air is in your chest cavities.
    • Epidural hematoma is when there’s blood between your skull and your brain.
  • [Extra] Taisho Era was 1912 to 1926.
  • [Extra] While iinazuke (許嫁) as one word means betrothed at birth, “ii nazuke” (いい名付け) means “good (ii) name (nazuke)”.

    I just wanted to point out something about your note on hitsumabushi. It is true that hitsumabushi is like unagi-don in that it’s unagi on rice. However, the difference isn’t actually in the way it’s serve but it’s actually in the way it’s eaten.

    For unagi-don, you just eat it straight from the bowl like a normal donburi. But for hitsumabushi, there are three different ways to eating it.

    Step 1: Divide the unagi and rice into four servings.
    Step 2: Scoop one serving into the provided empty small bowl, mix it and eat it like an unagi-don.
    Step 3: Scoop the second serving into the same bowl, add the provided condiments (e.g. wasabi, seaweed), mix then eat.
    Step : Scoop the third serving into the bowl, pour the hot tea or broth provided into the bowl and eat it like ochazuke.
    Step 5: Now that you’ve tried the three different ways to eating unagi on rice, enjoy the last serving whichever way you like.

    Personally, I like it plain like unagi-don followed by ochazuke style but I add some condiments in too. 🙂

I am sad tho they are introducing a separation in the last episode by an offer for her to go abroad. I hate those in all dramas.. I wish they hadn’t thrown that in, but I love this dorama.
