Koi wa Tsuzuku yo Dokomade mo – Episode 6

Dr. Tendo goes off to a business trip to Osaka and Sakura decides to follow him! She watches the new girl and Dr. Tendo get in the same taxi and…

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Medical
    • University of Michigan Medical Center has a pretty famous heart transplant program.
    • Cardiology and cardiac surgery is 2 different departments, and so Dr. Tendo and Dr. Kisugi is responsible for analyzing EKG but Miori is responsible for cutting the patient open.
    • atm is a standard measure of pressure.
  • Foods
    • Osaka is known as the food capital of Japan, and within Osaka, Nanba is especially known for its great food.
    • And handy trick at the restaurant– you can ask for your fatty tuna (ootoro) to be seared with a torch, and it makes it taste 10 times better for no extra cost.
    • Saltwater eel is called “anago”, not to be confused with freshwater eel which are called “unagi”.
  • Games
    • For those of you not familiar with the card game of President, you can read about the Japanese version (Sakura called it Daihinmin) or the English version.
    • Where the episode talked about chess, Sakura is actually referring to Shogi (the Japanese chess) instead.
    • The third game Sakura referenced, which I translated as ‘feudal card game’ is actually Bozu-mekuri. It’s a game played on karuta (tradtional Japanese playing cards) where you draw a card, and the card can either be of the type: monk/peasant, nobleman, noblewoman, or emperor. Each character forces you to take different actions, but the monk has the worst action set in which you have to discard all your cards.
  • Cultural differences [Spoiler!]
    • The scene where Tendo pretends to fall asleep after Sakura gets out of the shower may be seen as “cruel” in American culture but it’s a classic “gentleman move” in Japanese romance plots. He’s worried that she feels too pressured if he’s awake, so he pretends to be asleep and alleviate the pressure to have sex. I hope you can all appreciate his kindness!
    • The last line of the preview is such a hard line to sub, and this is why I always hesitate to translate previews. Literally, it says “It’s all your fault for making this weird kid be attracted to you” but… who says that?! I mean, never mind that it sounds awkward. Nobody I know thinks like this (that it’s her fault he’s attracted to her). So translating isn’t just about replacing Japanese words with English words, but it’s also about placing it in the correct context. In this case, such a scenario would never happen in America because no guy says this in a lovable/jealous manner. Every guy that says this is a psychopath!! So what do you do in this case? I took a stab at the possible context and rephrased it to sound a bit more normal. If the context turns out to be different, I’ll probably have to rephrase it significantly. Just a little “behind-the-scene” on how subtitling works!
  • Difference from Manga [Edited 2/22]
    • In the episode, Miori is suppose to be the younger sister of Minori. Most people assume they are twins because that was the setting in the manga. However, the drama never explicitly mention them being twins. But if you check TBS’s website… it mistakenly shows Miori as 33 and Minori as 26 even though Minori is suppose to be older. And furthermore if you read the description for Miori, it says “Minori’s twin sister” so… in conclusion, the TBS website is a hot mess!

  1. We really appreciate all your efforts on subtitling this amazing series! You also made an extra effort in subtitling the Mada mada series as well! You even have explanations on the terms used, culture differences and a lot more other things that are all really helpful for us non-Japanese viewers! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you very much!

  7. thank you for you hard work !!!
and concerning the miori-minori age on the website, i think they show minori’s age when she passed away that’s why she’s younger πŸ™‚

  9. thank you so much for the update, i love every episode and also the extra…good job with the subs!! in my opinion maybe Miori is Minori younger twin sister (just my opinion though)
Thanks again and looking forward for the next episode

  10. Thank you for uploading!!! I too noticed the age difference on the website between Miori and Minori, but I think it might be trying to say that Minori passed away at age 26? Maybe that’s why the ages appear different?

  11. maybe miori is mentioned as 33 and minori 26 ,because when minori died she was 26? but since time has passed since then and miori has aged shes now 33?

    1. I think it’s also worth pointing out that Tendo seeing Sakura bring board games and cards on their first out-of-town trip reminds him of Sakura’s innocence and inexperience. It’s easy to forget that they also have huge gaps in age and possibly experience in terms of intimacy. This might also remind Tendo of how serious Sakura was about him (and the medical field!) all along–she studied so hard to get into a Nursing program and worked her butt off to graduate and pass her exams that she never had a boyfriend. Hence, as you Blitz pointed out, Dr. Tendo’s β€œpretend sleep.”

  12. Thank you so much for all your hard work for the English subs and explanations for each episode. Thank you!! Looking for all of Takeru san’s movies/series.😍 You’re very much appreciated. How can we help you? πŸ€—
