Sakura turns over a new leaf and starts with a new goal this episode– to focus on her career. Tsuruoka Keiko, a woman in her 50s, arrive at the emergency room with a heart attack but she refuses to get the heart bypass surgery. As Sakura gets close to the woman and finds out why, she’s determined to make the patient’s dying wish come true. And when she herself experiences a life-or-death situation, she’s reminded of Tsuruoka’s words… and then finally….!!!!!!!
Translation Notes/Trivia
- This is a medical discrepancy but as the doctors were looking at patient’s test results, Kisugi actually suggests revascularization. This is different from the heart bypass surgery he later explains to the patient. For ease of understanding, I’ve translated the revascularization as bypass.
- You may have noticed Tendo’s favorite phrase is “baka” and while it can translated to any one of stupid, idiot, retard, I like to add distinction based on context. When he’s calling her “baka” at work, he’s insulting her lack of experience, and not necessarily her lack of intelligence. That’s why I use “retard”. In Episode 3 when Sakura mimicked Tendo in self-deprecating way, she said “idiot” and he defended himself saying he wasn’t that harsh. At the end of this episode, when she called him out, the baka he used was a very endearing kind, so I used “stupid”.

I am aware of the stigma and I certainly don’t use words lightly. The same way I won’t hesitate to use the n* word if a certain subtitle calls for it, language is to be used as a tool to convey emotions. Here, it’s conveying how much he looks down on her. I shift the translation of γγ« as Tendo shifts his usage from an insult to a loving moniker later in the show.
If you are aware then there is no excuse in using that word. βStupidβ and βidiotβ can be used just as equally to portray the context youβre looking for even with the shift of usage and in doing so you donβt cause offense to a whole group of people including myself. But from your answer I guess thereβs no arguing it with you.
Every word have their place and it’s an insult to language and linguists to suggest that words are interchangeable.
