- Cultural context
- In the scene where Nishi is introducing himself to Kairi, he actually calls Kairi “younger brother.” This is because even if he is younger than Kairi, if he marries Kairi’s older sister, Nishi automatically becomes the “older brother-in-law” in turn making Kairi the “younger brother-in-law”.
- Sakura mochi. Fun fact, in Tokyo and East Japan, sakura mochi is made from rice flour but in West Japan, it’s made from glutinous rice flour which makes it sticky.
- In a scene where Sakura meets Papa Tendo, did the translation feel awkward to you? That’s because even in Japanese, it was overly formal and awkward!
- The “shoes” scene. It’s a weird element to throw it in there but I think it’s synonymous with the “tying shoe laces” scene you see in Kdrama. It’s meant to show how he’s “taking care” of her.
- In Japan, the “best man” of the wedding is usually the groom’s boss.
- It’s very common for Asian countries to say “Happy Marriage”. They mean it as “Congratulations!” but it’s weird to me every time I see it.
- Medical: SVT (Supraventricular tachycardia) heart attack, unlike a heart attack, is caused by electrical issues rather than physical blockage of the heart. Which is why I suspect they asked for EKG. However… it’s a little weird to be asking for EKG at the location, like they have a portable EKG machine they could just roll up or something. So that part was weird.
- Easter Egg
- There is a children’s “power ranger” style TV show called “Kamen Rider” and it’s gone through several actors. Sato Takeru was one of them. Papa Tendo (Murakami Hiroaki) was another actor that had a role in the Kamen Rider show of many generation ago. So they have the whole “Kamen Rider” and “Kamen Rider Jr” theme going on here.
- Apparently this series was so popular it crashed Paravi (TBS streaming site) few hours after EP10 release!
- [Extra] The Japanese version of “red light green light” is played by calling out “Daruma doll has fallen over!” instead of calling out “Red light!”. In order to give the game some context, I merged the two call-outs.

Wow.
I don’t think there’s any other word to describe this drama. The story exceeded my expectation. The actors exceeded my expectation. The fandom, the reactions, the amount of followers, and the amount of visitors… they all exceeded my expectation. This is in the Drama Hall of Fame.
First, I like this story better than the manga. The manga had way more love triangles and while that creates more “drama”, it takes away from the real focus which is the battle between the Warrior and the Devil. It was much more relaxing in the drama because we got to focus on these two and cheer for Nanase. Don’t get me wrong–Jealous Tendo is good but in moderation.
I love that this drama doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s got a perfect balance of love, comedy, self-deprecation, seriousness, and easter eggs. For example, I’m a huge fan of Yamamoto Koji and I’m pretty sure the extra scene right before he hugs Nishi is a reference to his role in Shinsengumi!
Next, the actors. I watched Mone in L<3DK but I admit she didn’t leave as much impression on me as this series. At one point, when someone asked her if she feels her heart fluttering when she’s acting with Takeru, and she said “I do! I let it! I try to feel what the audience will feels, so the acting is more believable” and that really impressed me. Because human emotions are so weak if you let it “feel”, then how can you prevent yourself from falling in love?! What an actress!
And Takeru. I watched him talk on Yakai how he’s this super introverted, anime lover, escape-room lover, puzzle lover and I think it was really hard for him act so arrogant. I think he pulled it off really well.

I totally agree with your comments about the Dorama. Especially in the aspect that is much better than Manga. I have read it and I did not like it at all, compared to how they made the Dorama, which I really loved. Each of the aspects you mention is very true.
I also agree that I give the story an A ++ rating. The only thing that differs is that I personally give Mone-chan, the Protagonist, an A ++ rating. She is what I loved the most about the Dorama. This is the third story I see of Mone-chan, but she has already become one of my favorite Japanese actresses. I think it’s great, and more in this story, I really liked her.

Side random Q: Is Sakuraβs last name Sakura or Nanase? Tendo called her Nanase twice in the last ep that I wondered if Iβd incorrectly assumed her first name (aka itβs Nanase not Sakura)?
Sakura is her last name. So him calling her Nanase is significant. And also I thought there was some correlation to her bringing sakura mochi, which is why I left the translation as is.

In manga they already registered their marriage to goverment and make a ceremony later.. I think the wedding scene is hold for friends, like reception. And the place seems like in hospital’s chapel (that’s why they can do emergency reaction so fast)

Thank you so much for uploading this series with Eng Sub. It was a really good drama and I enjoyed the 1st episode until the finale. I am not someone who watched J-drama and the last J-drama I watched was around the year 2000. I am a little surprise how the current J-drama is so different from 20 years ago. I really enjoyed this series and because of this, I have tried others J-drama /movies starring Satoh Takeru and Mone, and I have to say, I enjoyed them.
I am so glad that I have found such a great J-drama and I do agreed with many of the viewers or fans that Takeru is indeed a very versatile actor. His portrayal of Tendo was really good. As for Mone, she suit the character of Nanase very well too. Both of their acting were not exaggerate and they gave off a very pleasant and lovely feelings for the viewers in all of their scenes.

One thing I wanted to mention was the use of the word βretard.β Even though it didnβt bother me many American fans may be offended by that word. βRetardβ stands for mentally retarded or mentally challenged. So those who have mentally retarded friends or family are especially sensitive about calling someone a βretard.β Itβs been a very sensitive issue lately. There are plenty of other words you could use that would have a similar meaning that wouldnβt be offensive. Like imbecile, airhead, birdbrain, doofus, moron, or scatterbrain. I just thought Iβd drop a line and let you know. Like I said, Iβm totally okay with it. But I thought Iβd let you know just for future reference.

Every episode was great, with a perfect balance of romance, comedy, morality, sadness etc. it made me feel all emotion and especially I smiled so much thanks to the main couple Sakura and Tendo. They’re just adorable and so opposite in personality, and their scenes as couple felt very natural and real. Love them (and the actors) <3 it's a great drama! Special mention for the theme song "I LOVE" which is so good too!
