In Hand – Episode 6

Takaie and Himokura are officially recruited as advisers to the Cabinet Secretariat. For their first case, SMRO is asking them to look into an athlete to ensure he’s not doping, before they reward him with a national award.

After visiting his house and observing him, Himokura is sure that this athlete, Shun Nogiri, is doping but he is not sure how. Himokura, Takaie, and Makino is also under severe pressure to stop investigating Nogiri after initial reports came back clean.

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • At one point, Takaie gets on the ground and enacts a scene between his mother and himself. This is a parody on stand-up comedy but it’s not very funny.
  • At one point, Himokura says “I’m not a child so she can’t tell me what to do.” This is the best translation that makes sense because the Japanese idiom for emphasizing a point is “to nailed a warning (to his head)” and Himokura makes a pun in response, saying “I’m not wood so she couldn’t have nailed that in.” Yeah, I don’t think it’s very funny either.
  • In one scene, Himokura and Takaie are eating seaweed wrapped mochi (rice cakes). Seaweed is “nori” in Japanese, and so is glue, so Himokura makes a pun “just like scissors and glue– and no, not that kind of ‘nori’!” I decided to just translate it and remove the pun because it’s not that funny in Japanese and it doesn’t add much.

  1. Thank you for EP 06. I was not too enthusiastic about this dorama until EP 04, but EP 05 was not bad. Let´s see how this continues…
The other one you put to vote – “Hakui no senshi” (in the meantime it received subs from another subber) – I like that a lot. It´s very funny.
