Gokushufudo Episode 8

There’s a new dessert shop in town which is threatening local business. Tatsu decided he’ll help out his town by opening a competing cafe. Backed by the local housewives, he gets a shop up and running but there are no customers… because he has scared them all away!

Translation Notes/Trivia

• Language
  • “Sad emoji” is a translation of ぴえん超えてぱおん which is a recently trending phrase that means “we’re past the point of peon (sad face) and at the point of paon (tear face). Here is an illustration (last face is pyon–big tear face)
  • “Hachiryukai” literally translates to 8-dragon committee. Each of the nearby towns are named <element><dragon>, so there is Kiryu (wood-dragon), doryu (mud-dragon), tenryu (sky-dragon), kairyu (sea-dragon), jiryu (earth-dragon), suiryu (water-dragon), karyu (fire-dragon), and kinryu (gold-dragon).
  • “Wagashi” is traditional Japanese sweets, usually made out of anko (red bean paste).
    • “monaka” is a light-weight crispy wafer (but not very sweet) used often in wagashi.
    • “kinako” is ground up soybean flour, often used to flavor mochi.
    • “dorayaki” is red bean wrapped in pancake-like bread.
    • “daifuku” is red bean wrapped in mochi. Strawberry daifuku are ones with strawberry in the center.
  • “Sutegoro” doesn’t mean anything as the way it’s read, but the way it’s written means “unarmed fight”
  • Misunderstandings.
    • When Lisa said “アポ” (apo) it’s short for appointment. Tatsu heard マッポ(mappo) which is slang for cops.
    • When Lisa said authorize, Tatsu mistakenly heard Osore-zan (a mountain in Japan).
