Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Language
    • “A hands-on dad.” In Japanese, they say ikumen (イクメン) which is a play on the word ikemen, which means a hottie. Ikumen, on the other hand is a man who is good at parenting.
    • “Kumi” (組) is translated as gang, clan, class, etc. in this episode. It’s used as a pun, because a a group of gang is called a kumi, but so is a class of rowdy kids.
    • Oniyome (鬼嫁) is a term for “wife from hell” but literally it means ogre’s wife. It’s a play on the fact that Tatsu was dressed as ogre.
  • Culture
    • Food having “mild” taste (=bland) is not a bad thing in Japan. It’s a cultural difference.
    • Sharing a shot. This was also referenced in episode 1, when they talked about “making alliances”. In this episode, you can see them carry out the action of taking the shot together to formalize a pact.
    • Nebuta or Danjiri (Japanese wiki link) are traditional Japanese festivals with large floats, drums, etc.
    • The wooden cup. The wooden cup, called masu, is generally used to drink sake (if it’s used to store liquid), which is why all the parents had a problem with it.
    • Momotaro is a classic Japanese story about a child born out of a peach, grows up strong, and helps fight the ogre that’s plaguing the town. The “lesson” Tatsu mentioned at the end is entirely embellished by him.
    • Kibi-dango is a sweet dumpling made out of millet flour.
