4-Pun Kan no Marigold – Episode 2

Himura Kazue is a lonely elderly who cooks and tries to feed everyone around her to cope with the loss of her son from 10 years ago. Especially around autumn close to her son’s death anniversary, she even calls the ambulances so she can find people to feed. This causes problems at the Yokohama Fire Department as the EMTs are tired of being dispatched only to find that there’s no emergency.

But Kazue also happens to be Ai’s cooking teacher and Mikoto finds himself befriending and enjoying her company when he’s not on duty.

Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Kinpira is a finely shredded vegetables stir-fried in soy sauce.
  • Human Dock is a comprehensive medical exam that most Japanese people take every year starting at age 35. It’s involves 2 days of testing and 1 overnight stay in the hospital, but some can be longer. The basic portion is usually covered by company-provided health insurance but optional tests like brain scans are not. The reason why it’s called Human Dock is because it follows the model of how ships “dock” at the port and get a complete checkup. Human Dock is attributed as one of the reasons why Japanese life expectancy is 100 years, because they emphasize early detection.

  1. Thank you so much for EP 02. Gee, I need to start watching this – so little time lately. But I have high hopes for tomorrow ^-^.

  2. Thanks for ep2. The “human dock” exam is fascinating. I’ve been reading more about it on the web. While it may seem excessive to some, the early detection philosophy makes sense to me. My recently retired boss was just diagnosed with state-four cancer. The ability to find it a lot earlier may perhaps have helped his situation. But, the concept of lots of diagnostic imaging for those with no symptoms is not something that’s done typically in the US.

  3. Oh, coolness, you’re doing this one as well. Everytime I think a show I want to see is unlikely to be subbed, there you go and pick it up. 😉 Much thanks for being all psychic like that and for the really good subs as well!
