Nao wakes up to a hustling and bustling Kougetsu An because it’s preparing for a large order for the upcoming religious ceremony. Nao decides to take advantage of this moment while everyone is busy to try and get to know some of the customers who have been around for over 15 years… because they might be able to tell her what happened…
Translation Notes/Trivia
- The lead actress, Hamabe Minami, is actually from Ishikawa Prefecture, where Kougetsu An is fictionally set in.
- Kisei Festival is a pre-ceremony to pray for good weather and safety (no injuries) throughout the series of major ceremonies. In most religious ceremonies, there will be offerings made to the god, and that’s what they were preparing at Kougetsu An.
- Mountain yam is different from regular yam because it becomes slimy as you grate it, called tororo. However, this is also the ingredient in okonomiyaki that keeps the food together.
- The song played during the scene at Shirafuji-ya is a nursery rhyme called Toryanse. It’s a little random, but I think there’s symbolism here in that this visit is her “first test as a daughter-in-law”.
- At one point, Nao recounts how her mother used to read to her. The snippet “The second smallest goat goes⦔ is part of the story from Three Billy Goats Gruff, translated into Japanese. I think it’s just suppose to represent “a cliche storybook” and doesn’t have any motif or significant to the story.
- Mount of Apollo: in palm reading, there is a name for every “mount” or part of your hand that is padded. (Not everyone’s hand is padded in the same spot). If your hand is padded near the base of your ring finger, that mount is called mount of Apollo. In palm reading, people with mount of Apollo is said to possess light, truth, beauty, and art. In Japanese, this is translated as mount of the sun.
- **Translation Style**: In episode 1, I was hesitant to use “craftsman” and in episode 2, I made a conscious choice to avoid it and use “artisan” instead because I didn’t like that craftsman is for men, and I’d have to use craftswoman for Nao. I also liked that artisan focuses more on art, whereas craftsman usually focuses more on functionality. I think when it comes to sweets, it’s more an art than function.
