Jiro and Kai have finally started their on-site training! They are dispatched to South Kanagawa Koban (neighborhood police station) and… immediately put into a room to do nothing. Unbeknownst to them, Yanagida had called ahead and told the police officers to keep a tight watch on Jiro and Kai! However, of course, the two troublemakers find a way out of there and in the middle of another tricky case.
Translation Notes/Trivia
- Beef nugget from Niku #10: “Niku #10” is the name of the fictional chain, and beef nugget is pretty much as you’d expect– ground beef (and sometimes a mix of beef and pork) deep fried in oil. This is called menchi-katsu (メンチカツ) in Japanese, and derived from the word “minced cutlet”.
- Slang: Phone scams almost always starts with “It’s me (オレ, “ore”)” so sometimes it’s also called ore-ore scams.
- Culture: In the phone scam flier, one of the item (#2) says to use voicemail and wait for the caller to say why they’re calling before picking up the call. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this feature in American phones, so I omitted the voicemail part. In Japan, you can actually listen to someone leaving a voicemail in real time and connect the call while they’re doing that.
- In Japan, it’s illegal to own guns except for the police. This is why these guys keep attacking the police to steal their handguns.
- In Japan, 110 is the emergency number for police (which is separate from ambulance or fire truck)
- Culture: In the hospital scene, the suspect calls Kai and Jiro as “omawari-san” which is actually “neighborhood watch officer” and distinctly different from police officer. They’re both law enforcement officers, but in Japan, different officers are equipped with different tools to fit their job description and neighborhood officers have much smaller jurisdiction and less protective gear than police officers.
