Eiji and Sakurako are planning a wedding! They manage to agree on the venue but when Eiji suggests that he wants Kuwano to give the best man’s speech, it causes a huge drama. First, Sakurako doesn’t want Kuwano to give a speech because she’s convinced he won’t give a good one and embarrass them. Kuwano doesn’t want to give a speech himself because he doesn’t believe in marriages.
Can their group of friends manage to convince Kuwano to give a nice, beautiful speech?
Translation Notes/Trivia
- Just as there is a nursery rhyme in English for pinky promise (“cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye”), Japanese school children say “Pinky promise. If you lie, you’ll swallow 1000 needles. Pinky promise!” In the show, Madoka uses a modified version. Instead of making the other person swallow 1000 needles, she’s asking Kuwano to buy her 100 bananas.
- The most overused pun in a Japanese wedding speech that “newlyweds should treasure three bags (fukuro/bukuro): stomach (i-bukuro), mom (o-fukuro), and patience (kannin-bukuro)”
- In the show, they don’t specifically say that Kuwano started an Instagram. They just say he signed up for a social networking service account. The translation uses Instagram because it’s more specific.
- At the ramen shop, Yuki call the place old. Literally, she’s saying it’s from Showa-era (1926 to 1989). Since we’re currently in the Reiwa-era, Heisei-era (1989-2019) is the new “old” and Showa became the “older than old” times.
- In the same ramen shop, when Yuki orders extra noodles, “kaedama” in a ramen context means extra noodles, but in exam context it means “to cheat by taking a test for someone”. The unspoken joke is that Madoka gets an idea how to outsmart Kuwano when Yuki says “kaedama”.
- “Moe” is now officially an English word inherited from Japanese, so I didn’t translate it. If you’re not sure, try urbandictionary for moe (result #2)
- The “monk story” is a loose translation for Kasa-Jizo which is a story of a humble man who gave up his own straw hat on a snowy night to a stone statue of a Buddhist monk, and was rewarded for his selflessness later.

Thank you very much for episode 8.
Thank you!
Thank you ^-^.
Thanks! 😁
Hi there, really enjoying your subs. BTW, a quick correction. In this episode, when Kuwano orders “mizuwari” at the bar, it implies hard-liquor with water (like scotch + water).
Hey, you’re right! I didn’t know that before. Thank you.
Keep up the great work! Thanks!
That wedding speech scene actually gave me the feels. Especially since I watched the first season when it first aired and thinking back on how much time has passed since then.
