Translation Notes/Trivia
- Donsaku is a snack invented in this drama world but it’s modeled after Umaibo.
- The name Donsaku comes from the catch phrase “Don-sounding impact and Saku-sounding crunch”.
- Umaibo is a corn-based crunchy snack food with very strong flavor. Some of the flavors are pretty out there, like Natto or Beef Tongue, but every flavor I’ve tried is delicious. It’s popular with kids because it’s cheap (around 10 cents). I’ve never found proof, but I swear it must have MSG in it because it’s so addicting.
- Tokyo Story is an actual, classic Japanese drama. (Not to be confused with the Tokyo Love Story from the 90s.) It’s about an elderly couple who lives in a countryside who makes a trek to Tokyo to visit their 5 children and their family, but each of the children is too busy with their lives to host the parents so the parents get passed around like hot potato. The person that ends up taking care of them is their late son’s daughter in law.
- Tokyo Story itself is based on the American film, Make Way for Tomorrow released in 1937.
- Many characters in this episode ordered “blend” at the coffee shop. This is simply referring to a generic blend of coffee beans as opposed to any specialty coffee. Hence, it’s translated as simply “coffee”.
- I laughed at the size difference between Kuwano’s speakers relative to his TV.
