M: Ai Subeki Hito ga Ite – Episode 1

Ayu decides to move to Tokyo with her grandma to pursue her dream of becoming a star. There, she meets a classmate who introduces her to disco. She goes to her first disco to meet… Max Masa.

Meanwhile, Max’s company–A VICTORY–has just moved their headquarters to a brand new building. However, the company has one big problem. 80% of their sales come from one producer, Kira, and Max is determined not to tie the company future to Kira.

• This show is not meant to be Hamasaki Ayumi’s biography. It’s a fictional drama (more drama than anything else) based loosely on her story.
• As part of “trying not to be too close to nonfiction,” they have given fictional name to several recognizable things.
  • A VICTORY is the fictional name for AVEX
  • Kira Tenmei is the fictional version of Komuro Tetsuya. Komuro boom was a real thing from 1994 to 1997.
  • USG is the fictional version of TRF.
  • Velfine is the fictional version of Velfarre, a real disco club in Roppongi owned by Max Matsuura

  • Gyaru or ko-gyaru, is the fad where everyone had dark skin and light hair. It was inspired by Baywatch/Pamela Anderson. Nowadays, there are tons of subcultures within gyaru.
  • Calling yourself in 3rd person. Ayu does this a lot in the show, and Hamasaki Ayumi herself did the same. It was seen as cute back then.
  • TONS. OF. KEYCHAINS. hanging off cellphones. Pretty sure this fad only died because people didn’t want to scratch their 5″ phone screen.

  • Ayu saying Max called her 7 times is in tribute to “Appears” lyric where it goes:

  • M is the theme song for this drama hints that M may be for Max Matsuura, rather than Maria as the lyric suggests. (Not going to reveal too much here, as I think the show will address it later)
