Kimi no Hana ni Naru — Episode 4

Dan gets challenged by the president to write a love song, but he has limited experience with love, so he attempts to invite Asuka out to a “date” in the name of research. The boys hear about it and pledge to help him out, by both sharing their experiences… and also tagging along on the date!!

Translation Notes/Trivia

• Buttons on school uniform. There is a school tradition to give away the “2nd button” to a girl you like, to remember you by after a graduation ceremony from middle or high school. This is specifically the 2nd button from the top of a button down uniform jacket, called gaku-ran, and it’s the 2nd because it’s the closest one to your heart. Now this tradition has been modernized in recent times where a girl would want a button but if the guy has already given away his 2nd button, then the girl ask for the other ones (usually there are 5). Thus “losing all your button” is synonymous with “being so popular that all the girls asked you for buttons.” In Naru’s case, it’s showing he was even more popular than the usual popular guy because all the girls asked for his gakuran buttons and his dress shirt buttons.
  • Historical background according to this article, is that this practice started back in WWII times when boys were drafted and they had to go to war wearing their school uniform because supplies were so short. And one of the boy left his second button with a girl back home to remember him by. Remember, even in WWII, gaku-ran was most likely worn by middle school kids… so tragic!
  • Furthermore, according to the article above, the other buttons mean: Self (1st), Friend (3rd), Family (4th), Stranger (5th) but I don’t think girls these days care as long as it’s a button from a popular boy.
