Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Language
    • In Japanese, both househusband and housewife is called “shufu” so the sub will switch them up where it makes sense.
    • Aniki is a term of endearment for an older brother, but in gang context, it can be used for Big Brother or someone they look up to.
    • In the grocery scene, the cashier says “I feel like the conversation went sideways” which is a common idiom in English. Literally, he said “I feel like this conversation just jumped 8 stories” to mean the same thing.
  • Culture
    • In Japan, it’s acceptable for police officer to pull you over and question what you’re doing, and they often stop you based on your appearance. That’s what happened to Tatsu in his first encounter with the police.
    • “Renkon” (lotus root) is a slang for revolvers. If you ever seen the cross-section of a lotus root, you might realize why…
    • Kousou is another word that caused a misunderstanding. 抗争(fighting) vs 香草(herbs) are both read as kousou.
    • The phrase “make a peace deal” comes up a lot in this episode. The Japanese phrase used is “盃を交わす” which means literally, to sit at the same table and share a drink together. In gang context, it means to make alliances. What’s funny (but lost in translation) is in the last scene with the police officer, Tatsu tells both the Yakuza and the police to sit at the (birthday) table and share a drink together.
  • Reference
    • Tatsu goes to Huntsman to shop for new weapon. If I’m not mistaken, this is in reference to the movie Kingsman, where Kingsman was a business fronted as a bespoke tailor shop, but stored all weapons and armor in the back. And the store Kingsman is inspired after an actual bespoke tailor shop in London’s Savile Row called Huntsman.

  1. I really only have one complaint
    It wouldn’t be 911
It would be 119 (because that’s Asia’s emergency number)

    1. He’s saying “(I’m) panicking” and it’s showing that instead of being a calm leader, he’s the first to freak out.

  2. thank you! I’ve had a rough day and this made it better. I love your translation style; you’ve struck a fabulous balance between the more literal fan style and cultural localisation and they’re a pleasure to read.
