Trivia/Translator’s Notes

  • When a doctor asks for “3-0” during surgery, they are requesting a specific size of suture material. The term “3-0” (pronounced “three-oh”) refers to the diameter of the suture thread.
  • Left atrial appendage closure: This is a medical procedure aimed at closing the left atrial appendage (LAA) to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.
  • Mitral valve regurgitation is a condition where the mitral valve in the heart doesn’t close tightly, allowing blood to flow backward in the heart.
  • Pulmonary emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that causes difficulty in breathing.
  • Japan is split into regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto (including Tokyo), Chubu (including Tokai), Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Tokai, in this case, is written as 東海. Not to be confused with Dr. Tokai, written as 渡海.
  • Transesophageal echocardiogram refers to a type of echocardiogram where an ultrasound probe is inserted into the esophagus to obtain detailed images of the heart. This technique provides clearer and more precise images compared to a standard transthoracic echocardiogram, as the esophagus is located close to the heart.
  • I was told that what sounds like “Juno” is actually the French word “Jeunot” meaning youngster. So I’ve changed Sera’s nickname to Jeunot.
