Based on the life of Yoshida Shigeru, Japan’s prime minister who fought for Japanese independence after WWII. Yoshida was neither a politician or a military man. He was just an ambassador who loved peace and diplomacy, and wanted to see a world where peace was restored and Japan was recognized as a equal and free country in the League of Nations.
Translation Notes/Trivia
- History
- The first time the Emperor made a speech declaring the surrender, his language was so formal that a lot of Japanese couldn’t understand him, and didn’t realize they had surrendered.
- Dodge line was a financial policy defined by Joseph Dodge.
- Japan asked for the return of Amami Island, Ryukyu Islands, and Bonin Islands but they were not granted until after the treaty. Amami Islands were returned in 1953, Ryukyu Islands in 1972. Ryukyu islands include the famous Okinawa Island. Bonin Islands is also known as Ogasawara Islands in Japanese, was returned in 1968.
- Black Ships is how Japanese refer to Perry’s visit to Japan which opened Japan to trade routes and western influences.
- Yoshida recruiting Sato for Cabinet scene
- Raccoons are shape-shifting pests in Japanese folklore.
- Yoshida describes his desperation as “I want you so bad there are hands coming out of my mouth to grab you.” Imagine a cross between medusa and Spirited Away’s no face.
- Banzai. When I asked Americans what banzai meant, they said “YOLO!” so I figured I should translate it to “Hooray!”. Literally, banzai means “Live for another 10,000 years!” Before a battle, especially a very risky battle, it could mean “Let’s go!” or “YOLO!”. But if it’s used after a victory, it means “victory!”
- Fried dough cookie (karinto) isn’t as disgusting as it sounds. Nor as bad as the wikipedia picture. It is definitely cheap post-war food though.

Despite the fact, that I´m locked in, there are no softsubs available. Could you correct that please? And while I am at it – do you know where to find a raw for this for direct download (no torrent)? My usual sources don´t have it. Thank you and stay safe in those wild times ^-^.
Hi. Torsten says he saw the softsubs and raw link after commenting. Are you still having trouble?
Haha, no sorry – not my day. Torsten actually is Screenrider ^-^.
Sorry, once I posted the comment the softsubs became visible and the link to the raw as well. Digital magic…

Thank you for subbing this along with Two Motherlands. As an American, I appreciate being able to see the other side of the story. I had a Japanese exchange student living with me when we watched Two Motherlands. She was impressed with the story. Again, thank you.
