Translation Notes/Trivia

  • Daifuku is mochi stuffed with red bean paste. Traditionally, there are different versions with different coarse-ness to the red bean paste. (Koshi-an is extremely smooth and fine, whereas tsubu-an has whole beans left in it, for more texture.) These days, there are even more versions with different filling that’s more than just red bean.

Commentary

This was very well written story that touched upon many current social problems in Japan. As you know, Japan is an aging country, and there are unique problems that comes with that. For example, with growing population of the elderly, more and more people are dying alone. If their immediate family is not around, the young people of the community really need to take a pause in their busy life and pay attention to the older population around them, like Ai-kun did with Kozue-san. Another example is how the drama tried to discourage suicide and impress upon everyone the importance of life, but also the importance of helping others with first aid. Japan as a society is notorious for “I’d rather not get involved to avoid trouble later” mentality. This drama showed how important that first 4 minutes are, before the ambulance arrives.
